DESIGN STYLE - My designs draw inspiration from the threads of my multicultural heritage while reflecting on the past. Born exploring the historic and elegant architecture in Paris to France’s agricultural countryside, I later grew up in Southern California, absorbing the beachside lifestyle which instilled in me a value for nature and sustainability, to learning tailoring craftsmanship in London. My French grandfathers significantly impact the Menswear I design today, coming from contrasting environments: a farmer in workwear to a businessman in tailored suits. My work blends French workwear, relaxed Californian silhouettes, constructed with London’s sartorial craftsmanship to create a personal narrative of Tailoring, Workwear, and Fragrances.
EARLIER LIFE, EDUCATION, & TRAINING - Drawing and illustrating from an early age found its way onto clothing. At fourteen, experimenting with screen printing original drawings onto garments became a profitable endeavor. By sixteen, an interest in the construction of clothing had begun to take precedence over its surface. The first lessons in pattern cutting and sewing came from his grandmothers in France. These early introductions to drafting and making were followed by studies in fashion business and garment production in Los Angeles, before moving to London to pursue further studies of menswear and traditional tailoring. A curiosity in perfumes began with the discovery of an old trunk of perfume bottles at his grandparents’ home at the age of five. Years later, whilst studying at Central Saint Martins, an encounter with a master perfumer in Grasse, in the South of France, led to the development of the first Max Foucaut fragrances. The collaboration continues to this day, with the fragrances presented internationally. Foucaut graduated from Central Saint Martins in BA Menswear Fashion Design. During and following his studies, he worked amongst independent artisanal makers and established British fashion houses. The greatest significance was his time spent working alongside a Savile Row bespoke tailor in Mayfair, where he furthered his understanding of traditional pattern cutting, cloth development and hand constructed tailored garments. The tailor remains a mentor today. Based in East London, Max Foucaut develops collections rooted in the traditions of tailoring and workwear, with an interest in historical clothing, fabrics with patina, and the preservation of craft.
