004 - MUD DYE TAILORED JACKET
SINGLE-BREASTED JACKET WITH PEAK LAPEL
COTTON LINEN MUD DYED IN JAPAN
- MADE IN LONDON -
Tailoring originated in Medieval Europe as a technical innovation, shaping cloth to follow the human form rather than simply draping it. By the 13th century, advances in cutting techniques allowed garments to be constructed with seams, giving rise to a more precise and structured fit. During the Renaissance, formal tailor guilds in London and Paris elevated the craft, establishing tailoring as a respected and honorable trade. By the 19th century, Savile Row, the small street in London’s Mayfair, became synonymous with bespoke tailoring, an institution that continues to shape modern Menswear.
Historically, the peak lapel was reserved for double-breasted jackets. Here, we subtly subvert this tradition, bringing the distinguished peak lapel to a single-breasted silhouette.
The Cotton Linen Tailored Jacket sharpens your presence while allowing effortless movement. The fabric’s rust brown colour with naturally fade into darker shades overtime.
Designed for both everyday wear and special occasions, this jacket carries forward the historic narrative of tailoring. To wear it is to engage with history, merging tradition with contemporary elegance.
Available as a stand alone jacket or three piece suit (mud dye waistcoat 006 and trousers 005).
DYEING PROCESS :
The cotton fabric is naturally dyed by hand using mud. The base fabric is initially soaked in a natural mordant made from plant seeds which helps fix the dye to the fabric and prevent fading. The mud is then applied by hand to one side of the fabric and the fabric is laid out to dry in the sun. At first the mud is grey but the fabric is then stored inside and over time the colour develops into this warm brown and rust colour. It takes 6 months in storage to fix the dye and to achieve this deep colour, after which the fabric is washed and sun-dried once again.
The time it takes to achieve the required colour and result can be heavily impacted by the rainy season, which means it can take up to a year to complete the process of production.
Due to the method of production the colour of the Mudcloth can vary from batch to batch, making it a truly unique fabric. The character of the fabric continues to develop as the colours marble and gradually fade with wearing.
